Holiday Edit for My Skateboarding Family

So long story short... NAH, this time I am actually going to tell the whole story of how this edit came about..

Every now and then I get a little spark and say to myself "Oh, I suppose I should go film a clip for Instagram for the homies." -You know, to stay relevant lol. This time was no different.

Everyone who knows me knows that in recent years I have become a very passionate fisherman. Fishing has become my first priority when it comes down to what I choose to do with my free time -I just can't help it. That being said, the only time I really had to get these skateboarding clips was to try to go film a trick over my lunch hour during the work week. I decided to forego eating and decided filming a trick was more important to my health :) I kept a keen eye on the forecast and went to the skatepark on the nicest days I could get an opportunity to go. (I think I got my first clip in late November) The weather continued to be darn nice for Iowa into December and because of that I decided, "Heck, I might as well just keep trying to film clips."

Filming skateboarding tricks has never been an easy task for me and as I age and skate less the complications of trying to film a trick are only magnified -especially on a very tight time frame. I am not conditioned for it at all anymore and warming up is an entirely different task these days.

So here was the routine-

  1. Clock out for lunch

  2. Drive home to let the dogs out

  3. Drive to the skatepark

  4. Spend most of the time stretching and getting warmed up (really hard when its cold)

  5. Have about 10-15 minutes to get the clip, or not

  6. Drive back to work

  7. Clock in

There was a day where it was so cold the weather drained my full phone battery in those fifteen minutes I had, miraculously I managed to get the trick with less than 10% battery life left. I still can't believe I landed the trick before my phone died. Come to think of it, my phone died right as I went to play back the footage to make sure I actually successfully documented the trick.

The clips became an edit when I randomly decided to throw a song onto the timeline in my editing software. I just thought I would "see" if a song would "added anything" -you know, feeling. As it turned out Leon Redbone's "I'm So Tired of Living All Alone" was perfect! I loved it! I just had to fill out the song with another trick or two. If I hadn't I know there would have certainly been regrets.

..And so the cycle continued until all loose ends had been tied, except for one -I needed an "ender" a trick I have never done before.

There are a lot of tricks I have dreamed up and always wanted to do but have never done -and I completely accept that because there are infinite tricks you can do on a skateboard. I needed a trick I knew I could do with an out of shape body that was no longer conditioned for skateboarding. I thought on it for a day or so and came up with the "Half Cab Smith Grind Kickflip out" Yea, I think I can do that.. Got it in fifteen minutes -I got VERY lucky. I felt so fortunate to have landed it because I was already getting tired and certainly felt the trick starting to slip away. I did not want to have to go back another day to get it -especially since the weather was about to get a lot colder. I just did not want to have to deal with that. The colder it gets the stiffer I get and the faster my phone dies. Oh I am so grateful it all worked out.

So there it is, a few more skateboarding clips for all ya'll to watch and enjoy :) I have no idea if it's important to anyone or really means anything to anyone, but to me it is a weird way of making myself feel like I'm bringing a little bit of good into the world. In my head it is a way to let folks know I'm still here trying to give it my all in one form or another. It may not look it these days, but I gave this edit my all.

Thank you Terence for hooking me up with a new board
